The NorthEast Bioinformatics Collaborative (NEBC) seeks to coordinate and expand bioinformatics research training and workforce development among the Northeast Regional IDeA States: Delaware, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. These five states co-founded the North East Cyberinfrastructure Consortium (NECC), which was developed in 2006 to collaborate on building the cyber-infrastructure in the region. The NEBC is comprised of the five Bioinformatics Cores from the INBRE programs in each state:

Members of the NEBC work collaboratively to:

(1) deliver bioinformatics training;
(2) share bioinformatics expertise; and
(3) help facilitate access to computational resources.

The NEBC makes it possible for member Bioinformatics Cores to offer more services and resources to faculty and students in their home states than would be otherwise possible. For more information about the NEBC, please contact Benjamin King, PhD, Co-Director of the Maine INBRE Bioinformatics Core.

Collaborative Publications

The NEBC has worked collaboratively to characterize the genome of the little skate, Leucoraja erinacea, in the Skate Genome Project. This project involved the development of bioinformatics training workshops that culminated in a joint project to annotate the mitochondrion genome of the little skate that included teams of faculty and students from all five states and resulted in three publications:

  • King BL, Gillis JA, Carlisle HR, Dahn RD. A natural deletion of the HoxC cluster in elasmobranch fishes. Science. 2011 Dec 16;334(6062):1517. doi: 10.1126/science.1210912. PMID: 22174244; PMCID: PMC3264428.
  • Wang Q, Arighi CN, King BL, Polson SW, Vincent J, Chen C, Huang H, Kingham BF, Page ST, Rendino MF, Thomas WK, Udwary DW, Wu CH; North East Bioinformatics Collaborative Curation Team. Community annotation and bioinformatics workforce development in concert–Little Skate Genome Annotation Workshops and Jamborees. Database (Oxford). 2012 Mar 20;2012:bar064. doi: 10.1093/database/bar064. PMID: 22434832; PMCID: PMC3308154.
